CURATING KNOWLEDGE: IBTE SSRC VISITS BRUNEI INNOVATION LAB THURSDAY, 30 NOVEMBER — Thirty-seven students and lecturers from the Institute of Brunei Technical Education Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus (IBTE SSRC) recently embarked on a journey of discovery with a visit to Brunei Innovation Lab, Anggerek Desa. The collaborative exploration aimed to expose students and faculty members to the forefront of scientific research and technological advancements, fostering a dynamic environment for knowledge exchange. Led by Naem Syukry, an intern from International Graduate Studies College (KOLEJ IGS), Kiulap, delivered a presentation and tour around the lab to the group, along with the elaboration of the firm’s objectives and goals, offerings, activities and more. The tour showcased the institution’s commitment to providing students with opportunities beyond the classroom, offering them a glimpse into the world of real-world research and innovation. Students had the privilege of interacting with additive manufacturing, driving simulator and virtual reality (VR) sets displayed in Digital Playroom of the lab, along with gaining insights. With the flexibility, the hands-on experience left participants not only with a sense of awe but also a newfound appreciation for the transformative potential of immersive learning. The excitement was palpable as students donned VR headsets, transporting themselves to simulated environments. Gasps of amazement echoed through the room as students interacted with their virtual surroundings, reaching out to touch objects that existed only in the digital realm. The truck driving simulator, a sophisticated piece of technology that mimicked the intricacies of real-world truck driving, proved to be a major highlight. Equipped with responsive controls, realistic visuals and immersive sound effects, the simulator provided a safe yet thrilling environment for students to test their driving skills. The flexibility does not only limited to entertainment but also planting the interest of students to pursue their studies, creativity, exploration as well as cultivating innovative ideas into future innovators. In an era where technological advancements are transforming the landscape of education and research, collaborative ventures like these highlight the potential synergy between academic institutions and cutting-edge laboratories. COLLABORATION SIGNING CEREMONY BIL X UNN Brunei Innovation Lab (BIL) and Unified National Network (UNN) have officially forged a dynamic partnership with the aim of cultivating a groundbreaking collaboration centered on education, technical ICT expertise, and propelling innovation growth within the nation. This collaborative endeavor represents a significant juncture, as both entities are dedicated to harmonizing their strategies and leveraging their respective expertise to actualize Brunei Darussalam’s vision for digitization and the Wawasan 2035 initiatives, propelling the nation toward its goal of becoming a smart nation.

Innovation challenge closing ceremony Innovation Challenge is a 5-week programme designed to address the real world problems by working on challenge statements from the industries as a technological team and innovate solutions. The announcement of winners took place on October 22 at the Design and Technology building in Anggerek Desa. These winning teams are now poised to join other promising solutions from the 5-week challenge in BIL’s next developmental program, the Innovate Accelerator. (source: Biz Brunei, 2023) Under the accelerator program, participants will undergo further training and receive resources over the next five to six months to propel the development of their prototypes towards commercialization. (source: Biz Brunei, 2023) The goals for this programme are: • Central Platform for Innovation: To provide an opportunity and platform for participants to validate their innovation and technological ideas and turning into reality. • Inspire Entrepreneurship: To produce more technopreneurs in the entrepreneurial ecosystem • Development Support: To align with Brunei Innovation Lab (BIL)’s aim to support the development of technopreneurs. Drone startup SkyVision clinched first place and a B$10,000 prize with its AI-powered photo and video surveillance system at the inaugural Innovation Challenge hosted by Brunei Innovation Lab. everBetter secured second place and a B$6,000 award for its data dashboard designed for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), while Keplar claimed third place, earning B$4,000 for its mobile application focused on pet supplies and stray animal control. Collaboration Signing Ceremony BIL & NiAT On Thursday 27th April 2023, BIL and NiAT formed a new collaboration that will allow both organizations to leverage their expertise and resources to provide enhanced services and experiences to their members, customers, and communities to create a better future for everyone involved. NiAT will be included in the BIL Framework where its OBSERVE platform enables users to integrate various datasets such as satellite remote sensing data and technologies for location-based intelligence, and as mentor or consultation in the various accelerator programmes as well as being an opportunity sponsor as collaborative support.
